Messy play may be incorporated into gross motor activities such as

  1. ice skating on shaving cream covered surfaces
  2. swinging prone while hands manipulate paint or other messy materials on the ground
  3. sitting on a platform swing while washing soap off a doll
  4. propelling on a scooter board to retrieve pieces of play dough from a container across the room
  5. crawling over sand at the beach
  6. Use weighted and/or vibrating materials during messy play

Incorporating messy play during gross motor activities combines the sensory stimulation from movement ( vestibular sensory system), deep pressure/vibration (proprioceptive sensory system) and tactile system (touch). Sensory play promotes motor planning, bilateral coordination and learning concept such as wet and dry.
