Form Boards are also a great way to teach the Circle Concept…
The following is an excerpt from my book From Rattles to Writing: A Parent’s Guide to Hand Skills
Playing with form boards can be as simple as placing a round shape (made
of cardboard, plastic, or wood) inside a round opening on a board. After your
child learns how to insert the circle shape, offer the greater challenge of boards
with two, three, or more shapes. The form board pictured below provides three
opportunities to fit a round shape into an opening. The knobs make it easier
for little hands to grasp.
Babies typically learn how to fit the following shapes in the order below:
- circle
- square
- triangle
Although form boards may not
require color matching, they provide a
fun opportunity to teach color as well as
shape concepts.
