Media- books, health care seminars, lectures and articles such as the following- have described the extreme challenges of memory impairment on loved ones and caregivers, as well as on the victims. Every year more and more middle-aged children and sometimes grandchildren realize the horrible situation that in the United States Medicare does not pay basic custodial caregiving and this will never change until the government decides that caregiving is worth spending taxes on. This requires a change in American values that enables taxing billionaires out of existence and creating the housing and other services that victims of dementia require in order to live safe and enjoyable lives.
Funding research sounds nice, but that is not a solution to the caregiving crisis: shortage of money to pay for residential or at home services…
I have been reading articles much like this one…. all of my 71 years…
When I was a middle aged caregiver/daughter and occupational therapist I wrote about
experiences in my book Still Giving Kisses: A Guide to Helping and Enjoying the Alzheimer’s Victim You Love. The digital edition is sold on Amazon and I sell print copies using paypal. Amazon has made it too complicated for me to remove the print edition from their website and I don’t want to spend my life dealing with amazon figuring out how to make my password work. So, please do not order the print edition on the Amazon site… Here is the link if you wish to order a print edition. The following posts provide lots of caregiving/occupational therapy suggestions…
