Swimming Noodles Can Promote Gross and Fine-Motor Skills!

The wonderful thing about swimming noodles (not only that they are inexpensive) is that they enlarge materials, making them easier to use. For example, the child in the following Instagram post can more easily jump over a big noodle than a skinny rope…

The noodle in the following post creates a flimsy ring stack that the client needs to stabilize with one hand. This promotes bilateral hand use, trunk rotation and left/right awareness.

A few more noodle ideas….

  1. slice them up to create donut shapes for stringing, stacking or handing on hook boards.
  2. Integrate noodles into obstacle courses that include stepping or jumping over the noodle.
  3. Slice one side of the noodle so that it can be attached to a hanger. Pants will not fall off so easily…. (see video below)
  4. Enlarging handles, especially helpful for people with arthritis or cerebral palsy. Try slipping string through a noodle to make it easier to hold a balloon.
  5. Hack to hold playing cards, great for people with decreased motor control.

and a noodle attached to a plunger enabled me to set up this sensory activity for a client who loves to explore objects….
