Young People Find Hand Activities Therapeutic!

Maybe any screen-free activity is a novelty these days. I’m not a grandma, but I have been enjoying “grandma activities” all my life. I am grateful to have grown up in the 1950’s with a mom who made many of my clothes and a dad who made sculptures of our family members.

Occupational therapists understand the innate value of hand activities for people of all ages. Fine-motor activities reduce anxiety and creating things is good for the spirit while providing a sense of accomplishment. It’s a relief to learn that arts and crafts, board games, blacksmithing and other non-digital recreation and hobbies are making a comeback. I hadn’t realized that hand activities that don’t involve rapid thumb movements were dying out…and just look at the young lady’s bilateral coordination and beautiful grasp on the tool she is using….
